Luminaria Oxx

from$2,770.00 MXN

Óox‘ comes from the Mayan word meaning three. Three were the main graphic symbols in Mayan numerology: the snail or seed, the dot, and the line. The table luminary is inspired by the lattices of the Yucatan Peninsula and pays homage to the Jipijapa weaving and stone carving, ancestral techniques of the Mayan region. Elaborated in collaboration between designer Isaac Cruz, designer Camila Fernández, and the stone carving artisans for Inédito 2019, an initiative of Design Week Mexico.

The original phrase translated into English is: ‘The jipijapa fabric, a native plant from the tropical areas of the American continent, began to appear in Campeche around the year 1800. Artisans collect the jipi to prepare its fibers until obtaining different thicknesses. This fiber weaves in a humid environment, and the process depends on the fineness of the fabric, which can take from one week to one month. Stone carving, from miniature pieces to monumental ones, was one of the greatest artistic expressions of the ancient Maya. Today, artisans keep this technique alive by using stones such as Maya cream, representative of the Yucatan Peninsula, to create unique pieces with unparalleled finishes.
