Translation: ‘Wood carving, as well as stone carving, is another one of the greatest artistic expressions of the ancient Maya. Today, artisans work sustainably with native woods from the jungle in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche. As part of their preparation process, the woods undergo a lengthy drying process before being worked and transformed into unique pieces.
The weaving of jipijapa, a native plant from tropical areas of the American continent, began to appear in Campeche around the year 1800. Artisans collect jipi to prepare its fibers and obtain different thicknesses. This fiber is woven in a humid environment, and the process depends on the fineness of the weaving, which can take anywhere from a week to a month.
