Horn Clutch

$770.00 MXN

Small bag woven from henequen, fiber from the agave native to the Yucatan peninsula, on a backstrap loom. It has a large carved horn button that accentuates the color of the fibers. The bag in a contemporary application of centuries of history and knowledge.

The carving of horn was introduced in the Viceroyalty in Mexico and has been perfected over time by the Mayans. Today, it is a globally recognized technique, native to Yucatan, that uses only recovered material. The Mayan backstrap weaving technique was developed in the western mountains of Guatemala before the arrival of the Spaniards. The technique involves interweaving cotton threads with a pair of sticks that gradually form a canvas with the weaver‘s movements in sync with the back-and-forth motion of the rods. Henequen, being a fiber with qualities such as flexibility, softness, and durability, makes it the perfect raw material for working with this technique.
